Majestically located at the head of a deepwater ocean inlet in the south-central heart of Vancouver Island, Port Alberni is a friendly and affordable fishing, lumber, retirement and recreation town with incredible outdoor adventure activities just minutes away.
Whether it’s fishing, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, boating, kayaking or canoeing – it’s here! Natural gems in the region include Cathedral Grove’s old growth forest, breathtaking Della Falls, Mount Arrowsmith, the Alberni Inlet, the Barkley Sound & Broken Group, Stamp River Falls, Sproat Lake and the historic Log Train Trail.
Step back in time on a vintage steam train that chugs through the valley to Canada’s only working steam sawmill; the McLean Mill National Historic site, board the cargo freighter MV Francis Barkley on route to the Barkley Sound and Bamfield, or snap pictures of black bears foraging for berries and salmon on the west bank of the Somass River – safely visible from the Victoria Quay.
In the past two years Port Alberni’s Sockeye salmon returns have been the largest in recorded history. An energetic team of salmon enhancement volunteers and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans have been improving salmon habitat throughout the Alberni Valley through the highly successful Robertson Creek Hatchery. Port Alberni was awarded the World Fishing Network’s coveted “Ultimate Fishing Town” designation in 2010.
The City of Port Alberni offers much to both those living here and those thinking of relocating to the area. There are two beautiful waterfront quays, a deep sea port, an airport, new full service hospital and shopping centres, a casino, the Echo Aquatic Centre, Museum and recently upgraded library. Port Alberni has exceptional recreation facilities - the Alberni Valley Multiplex arena is home of the BCHL Alberni Valley Bulldogs, and a brand new (LEED) high school is slated to open in 2012.
Port Alberni has something for everyone – including several new housing developments, single family dwellings, condos, townhomes and patio homes, hobby farms and large acreages as well as lakefront properties that range from weekend cabins to simply luxurious.
